Talking with Patients about Sexuality

Program Objective

At the completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify strategies to improve patient care through education about cancer-related sexual dysfunction.
  • Distinguish the difference between the categories of sexual dysfunction and questions to ask for each category to illicit information
  • Discuss how to integrate FSIS and MSIS with patients.
  • Discuss common sexual concerns of patients with cancer.
  • Discuss possible treatment options for common concern and when to refer out.

Guest Speaker

The keynote presentation will be presented by Shannon Bertha, ACS, PhD. She is a trained sexuality counselor and certified through AASECT. Dr. Bertha is also a Professor at Kean University and Middlesex County College, teaching various courses in human sexuality and health. Most recently, Dr. Bertha was a contributing editor for the college text book “Core Concepts in Health” for the chapter on Sex and Your Body, which should be published within the year.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed for healthcare professionals caring for patients that may have questions about sexuality (physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists).

Continuing Nursing Education Credit

An application has been proposed for 1.5 contact hours.

This activity has been submitted to the Oncology Nursing Society for approval to award contact hours. ONS is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s COA.


This course has no associated registration fee. Dinner, all course materials/handouts, and Continuing Nursing Education Credits are provided free of charge.
